You may not think that spring is entirely synonymous with HVAC maintenance, but by the time you’re setting the clocks forward, it may be a great time for you to think about maintaining your HVAC system.
Like any other system in your home, you may want to take the time to work on your HVAC system to make sure it is running optimally. While you can hire a professional to come out and do most of the heavy lifting, there are also some steps you can take right at home to keep your HVAC system in tip top shape.
Spring Cleaning
We often forget about our HVAC system because it’s so out of sight. We control it with a wall thermostat or an app, and we really only think much of it when it’s on the fritz. It’s good to think of your HVAC system the same way as you would think of a gaming console. You wouldn’t let dust, dirt, and grime pile up on your Xbox, as it would hinder its usage, so why do the same for your HVAC unit?
Head over to your furnace and/or air conditioner and check it for blockages. Make sure there is adequate clearance around each HVAC item, and there’s no “dust bunnies” blocking essential areas like intake vents.
Make sure to vacuum your vents inside of your home too. If you have floor vents, they can be a magnet for dust, dirt, pet hair, and other things that can clog up your system or redistribute through your home.
Air Filter
When’s the last time you swapped out your air filter? If you’re a diligent air filter swapper, then you may write the date of the last swap on the filter. Spring is the perfect time to grab a new air filter — especially if you deal with seasonal allergies. A special HEPA filter can often help you filter out pollen and dust from your home’s air, giving you much needed spring time allergy relief.
Don’t forget your thermostat
If you don’t have a fancy thermostat that automatically switches from HEAT to COOL, you’ll want to remember to switch it over by hand once the nights start getting warm enough to warrant it. Or, if you’re feeling like you’re due to give yourself an upgrade, tax return season is a great time to invest in a new programmable thermostat or even a smart thermostat like a Nest.
