How the phase out of R22 refrigerant affect older systems

What Refrigerant is in my Cooling System?
On January 1, 2010, the EPA implemented a ban on the production and import of R22, except for continuing servicing needs of existing equipment. If your AC was built and installed before January 1, 2010, there’s a good chance that it uses R22 refrigerant.

What If My AC Uses R22?
The ban doesn’t require you to replace a functioning, R22 refrigerant AC system. However, as of January 1, 2020, you may need to evaluate your options if your air conditioning system fails or requires emergency repairs.

Repair Option
While R-22 remains available for servicing equipment made before 2010, the price of R22 refrigerant is likely to increase due to shrinking supplies, and repairing your old system may not be cost-effective.

Replacement Option
At some point, you will need to replace your broken air conditioning system. Purchasing a new system before the upcoming cooling season will provide you with the time to evaluate the latest products and their efficiency and cost. Replacing your system early will ensure you have a properly working system when the need arises.
